List of Art Deco buildings in Tasmania
This is a List of Art Deco buildings in Tasmania.
Art Deco is a loose term, only in use in regard to architecture since the 1980s. Some people use it for all non-traditional interwar architecture, but this is not terribly helpful and is not recommended. It may include all three categories listed below:-
- Interwar Free Classicism (Deco Free Classicism): using classical motifs largely as decoration, in a very stylised or abstracted manner, with little reference to the norms of the classical language
- Jazz Moderne [Zig-Zag Moderne]: No particular classical references. Angular lines and vertical emphasis. Somewhat related to ‘Skyscraper Gothic’.
- Streamlined Moderne: No particular classical references. Curved lines and horizontal emphasis. Related to the ‘streamlining’ of contemporary forms of transport.
This page is a list of major historically significant Art Deco and Moderne buildings in Tasmania.
